“Khaled Hosseini” Khaled Hosseieni, for me the hero of A Thousand Splendid Suns was this man. It was his second novel after the hit of Kite Runner. Malala Yousafzai, a name so popular in the world that everyone knows that how much hype this girl has created in a very short span of time but does anyone know the reason behind it? Almost all of us know that she is the youngest Noble Prize laureate and UN Ambassador but do we all know why? There are still some people in our society don’t know what wonders this young girl has created and that how brave and courageous she has been throughout the years. How this girl sacrificed her life for the basic human right that is EDUCATION. The Right to Education. Not only herself but how the whole Yousafzai family stood up and fought for Girl Education and Women Rights in Pakistan. This girl was and will never be afraid of the Taliban.
“I am Malala” a novel written by Christian Lamb is the remarkable tale of a young girl and her family uprooted with global terrorism of the fight for Girl Education. Ziauddin Yousafzai, father of Malala Yousafzai who himself championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school. In the novel, she says that “I was a girl in a land where rifles were fired in celebration of a son, while daughters are hidden away behind a curtain their role in life is simply to prepare food and give birth to children.” These lines depict how women are suffering in a male-dominated world. Her parents always had a fierce and unconditional love for their daughter in the society that prizes sons.
The arrival of Taliban seemed to them as Vampires! They started bombing schools and decreed that girls couldn’t get an education. Her father was a school principal and he always motivated and encouraged her to speak out. She was only 15 at that time but threats were made against her and her family as well. And in October 2012, she was riding the school bus with her friends, a man with a gun climbed abroad the vehicle and shot Malala in the head.
After this attack, the whole world was stunned and called it as a coward’s act. Many people prayed for her recovery. Amazingly, Malala Yousafzai survived the bullet and was able to recover. She and her family currently live in England but Malala writes that how much she misses her home country, Pakistan. And wishes to return back to be with her friends. Her graciousness was such that she did not wish to revenge on her attacker and instead prays for peace. She says, “Why are we Muslims fighting with each other? We should focus on practical issues. We have so many people in our country who are illiterate and many women who have no education at all. We live in a place where schools are blown up. We have no reliable electricity supply. Not a single day passes by without the killing of at least one Pakistani.” Education is our basic right not just in the West, Islam too has this right. Islam says every girl and boy should attend school. In The Holy Quran, it’s written that God wants all of us to imbibe knowledge. Taliban took their pens and books, but they couldn’t stop their minds from learning. Malala’s plight and vision are inspiring to everyone, silencing her with the gunshot the Taliban instead gave her an even bigger voice that has been heard worldwide.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Women’s rights, Current Events, History or Inspirational memories. I was glued to the book reading page after page with breath snatching speed. I admire her courage and tenacity and also hope that her country will one day find peace. Not just her country, but the whole world needs peace and for that respecting women and providing them education is necessary.
I am Malala, my world has changed but I have not. This girl has definitely taught all of us to be brave, have courage, become fearless and to believe in what we want to believe in. She has touched a million lives and inspired all of them.
We all must support this young girl in everything she is doing. All the efforts and fights she has been making throughout the years against all the odds only and only for basic Human Rights and Education!
